National Disability Insurance Scheme

NDIS clients who self-manage an individualised funding package must consult their scheme case manager to determine if functional and therapeutic services provided by an osteopath can be paid for with package funds.

If you are a self-managed client wishing to choose an osteopath to enhance your function for activities of daily living, you will need to do the following things.

1) Bring your current NDIS support plan to your chosen osteopath.

2) Ask the osteopath to write a letter to your case manager that describes the therapeutic and functional approaches they would use to help you meet your support plan goals. In general, your osteopath will not be able to give you hands on treatment, and the osteopath will outline other non-manual therapy intervention strategies to help you meet your NDIS support plan goals. The strategies an osteopath would use include exercise programs and therapeutic activities for you to perform at home or with your carers to improve your function and participation in the community.

Once the letter has been written, ask the osteopath to email it directly to your case manager or give you a copy to handover to the case manager. The NDIS and your case manager will work with you to determine what services are ‘reasonable and necessary’ to manage your functional needs.
