Frequently Asked Questions

What is CPD?

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is the systematic way in which Osteopathy Australia maintain, improve and broaden the competencies and expertise required in their professional lives. It is a process of life-long learning that draws on a range of activities across a career. For Osteopathy Australia, CPD should:

  • relate to your practice as an Osteopath;
  • be additional to activities already undertaken in the course of your practice or employment;
  • broaden your experience in practice and;
  • maintain an understanding of all competencies applicable to Osteopathy Australia.

Why should I undertake CPD?

Providing high-quality services for the long-term benefit of both the broader community and the environment in which we live is a strength of our profession. This requires us as Osteopaths to maintain and enhance our skills and knowledge, while keeping abreast with changes in technologies, legislation and sustainable practices, as well as new products and materials. Osteopathy Australia requires Osteopath to participate in continuing professional development in recognition of the importance of life-long learning in maintaining and building competence.

Your commitment to maintaining your own CPD:

  • enables you to build the competencies and expertise you need to succeed in a competitive business environment
  • helps you to achieve your professional development and career goals
  • builds your reputation with clients, within your organisation and across the profession
  • makes you more employable, both in the profession and in related sectors

Where do I start?

It is good practice to develop an annual plan for your own CPD outlining your CPD objectives, proposed activities and timeframes:

  • Consider the work you will be required to undertake in your practice over the next twelve months and your own professional and career goals.
  • Identify the competencies and knowledge that you will need to achieve these.
  • Identify your strengths and gaps to help you decide where you would like to focus your learning. Consider your organisation’s learning and development plan (if applicable), your own learning style and your work and home commitments.
  • Establish your own CPD objectives and identify the types and timing of CPD activities that will best enable you to achieve your learning outcomes.

What are my CPD requirements?

You must complete 25 hours per CPD cycle (1 December to 30 November), including 4 hours covering one or more of the mandatory topics.

The Osteopathy Board of Australia's mandatory topics are:

  • Osteopathy Board of Australia (OBA) registration standards, codes and guidelines.
  • Overview of the National Law
  • Advertising a regulated health service and social media policy
  • Evidence-based practice
  • Risk management
  • Recordkeeping
  • Informed consent
  • Effective communication
  • Professional boundaries
  • Confidentiality and privacy

You must also have an up-to-date nationally recognised current first aid certificate which is at least a senior first aid (Level 2) certificate or equivalent. Remember, to remain current, your first aid qualification should be updated every three years.

Important webinar changes from 1 March 2025

From 1 March 2025, we will introduce changes to our webinar structure. These changes have come about because securing presenters for webinars has become increasingly difficult due to low attendance. While registrations have remained high, actual attendance and participation are poor, and presenter feedback highlights that low engagement during Q&A sessions has influenced their willingness to participate in future webinars.

To maintain the value of CPD and address these challenges, we will introduce a $15.00 fee for on-demand webinars starting 1 March 2025. CPD should be a meaningful investment, not just a tick-box exercise. The fee encourages active participation, respects presenters' time and effort, and aligns with industry standards.

These changes apply only to webinars featuring guest presenters, such as allied health professionals, patient groups and other associations. Members who attend the live webinar will still receive free access to the on-demand recording.

Still free: Webinars delivered by members, sponsors or staff will continue to be free for members. Including a short quiz after each webinar helps ensure Ahpra continues to recognise Osteopathy Australia's CPD offering as high quality and verifiable.
