Why research matters

Research is fundamental to the growth, credibility, and future of osteopathy. It builds the evidence that informs clinical decision-making, demonstrates the value and impact of osteopathic care, strengthens advocacy efforts, and supports better outcomes for patients.

At Osteopathy Australia, we believe research is not just for academics it is for every osteopath. Whether you are applying evidence in practice, contributing to a survey, collecting patient outcomes, collaborating on a project, or leading a clinical study, research is a shared responsibility that underpins high-quality, patient-centred care. As identified through our research planning work, we do not need every osteopath to become a researcher, but we do need every osteopath to support research.

Our research strategy is guided by what we have identified as the 5Cs, which shape how we strengthen research across the profession:

  • Connect and collaborate – fostering meaningful relationships, partnerships, and shared learning across the osteopathy community
  • Culture – embedding research as part of everyday professional practice
  • Capability – building the skills, confidence and pathways needed to engage with research
  • Celebrate – recognising and showcasing research achievements and impact

Research engagement is not a single destination it is a journey. Every osteopath can contribute to the profession's evidence base, regardless of their experience, interests, or career stage. For some, that may mean staying informed by the latest evidence. For others, it may involve participating in research projects, contributing data, pursuing higher degree research, or leading research initiatives.

Our Research Engagement Ladder reflects the many ways members can engage with research and contribute to advancing the profession. Each rung represents an opportunity to build knowledge, confidence, and impact. Wherever you are on your research journey, Osteopathy Australia is here to support your progression through mentorship, resources, networking opportunities, and practical pathways to help you take the next step.

Together, we can build a stronger research culture and a more evidence-informed future for osteopathy.
