Dr Claire Richardson (Osteopath) will present this special webinar which will draw on Dr Alison Sim’s (Osteopath) recent research regarding an early intervention (developed and delivered by osteopaths) to mitigate distress and enhance pain management and self-efficacy in patients following a motor vehicle accident. The content will be relevant to any Osteopaths interacting with patients following motor vehicle accidents. The presenter will explain findings within the research that can assist in guiding clinical decision-making when working with this population of patients.

Learning objectives:

  1. Reviewing recent research (developed and delivered by osteopaths) regarding the outcomes of an early intervention for patients post motor vehicle accident.
  2. Understanding the current evidence for motivational interviewing in the clinical context.
  3. Understanding the relationship between distress and heightened pain/propensity to chronicity. (ie Why is this research important?)
  4. Understanding the current evidence for social support in pain management.
  5. Understanding how to implement these findings into current clinical practice.

Your presenter:

Claire Richardson is an Advanced Practice Pain Management osteopath. She undertook her osteopathy training at Victoria University, graduating in 2011. In 2018, she gained her postgraduate qualifications in pain science at the University of South Australia. She is the co-director of Chadstone Region Osteopathy, where she consults clinically with patients experiencing chronic conditions. She also works for BOOST Recovery, a telehealth based, multidisciplinary pain management program, as a pain coach for patients with chronic and complex pain. Claire currently also runs the RMIT University Chronic Pain Student Clinic and has previously taught pain science and rheumatology subjects at Victoria University. Claire is passionate about biopsychosocial approaches to clinical care and believes that osteopaths are well placed to understand and treat the complex nature of pain states.
