Workshop overview and objectives

Workshop overview

Developed in 1989 the Perrin TechniqueTM is a structured approach to assessing and managing symptoms associated with myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME)/chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). In this three-day workshop, you will learn how to examine patients for physical signs that may assist in the evaluation of ME/CFS and fibromyalgia (FMS) - signs that were examined in an NHS study at Wrightington Hospital, UK, published in the BMJ Open (Hives L et al.  Nov 2017). This study, along with its implications, will be discussed in detail.

Through hands-on practical sessions, you will gain an understanding of manual approaches that may be used when working with ME/CFS, FMS and long-COVID patients while addressing common comorbidities, such as postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) and Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS).

Workshop objectives and learning outcomes

At the end of the three days, participants should be able to:

  1. Use the techniques demonstrated to screen patients for ME/CFS and FMS in their clinical practice.
  2. Know how to examine the patient for the early physical symptoms and diagnostic signs for possible ME/CFS and FMS.
  3. Be able to identify aetiological and maintaining factors that may have predisposed the patient and increased their susceptibility to develop ME/CFS and FMS.
  4. Accurately assess the level of severity of the patient’s illness and calculate the prognosis for their condition.
  5. Understand the principles and gain the skills to practice the manual treatment of the neuro-lymphatic system, which is the Perrin TechniqueTM
  6. Understand the pathogenesis of ME/CFS and FMS from a biomechanical perspective.
  7. Have an understanding of the wider management of the ME/CFS and FMS patients to support patient wellbeing.
