Submission: Private Health Insurance Funded Chronic Disease Management Programs

The team provided feedback to the public consultation on the proposed expansion of professions eligible to provide services under the private health insurance funded chronic disease management programs.

Feedback provided on the Private Health Insurance funded Chronic Disease Management Programs

The association recently provided feedback by submission to the open consultation on private health insurance chronic disease management programs (CDMP). This consultation proposed the eligible professions able to provide services under the CDMP to be expanded to practice nurses, nurse practitioners and mental health nurses. In our response, we called for a full review of the program to be conducted, including meaningful engagement with the allied health sector as well as defined scopes of practice and clinical governance frameworks to be established before the list of eligible professions should be expanded.

We also called for private health insurers to be more transparent with how these programs are run, providing information on how patients are selected, which professions are engaged and overall data on participation. We also recommended that allied health professionals are able to refer into the program and be coordinators of care.
