The Supervised practice framework outlines the expectations of supervisees, supervisors and employers to carry out supervised practice effectively. The framework was created in 2022 and has not been updated since.
The goal of the review was to tighten up the framework and consult with the allied health community on the value of proposed resources, ensuring the framework is a useful tool for supervisees and supervisors.
Osteopaths who have participated in supervised practice report that the framework document provides sufficient information and is an important resource. However, further guidance received from Ahpra and the National Boards lacks the clarity needed to effectively support osteopaths, undermining confidence in the process. As such, we have made sure that we have represented you in our feedback.
Ahpra and the National Boards should make expectations clearer. Guidance should outline the requirements, including the required hours and supervision level, while assuming the supervisee and supervisor have no prior supervised practice experience.
Supervised practice plans should be approved in a more timely manner. Osteopaths returning to work after supervised practice should not be delayed by administrative process.
The four supervision levels are suitable, and flexible supervision is necessary in rural and remote communities. Remote supervision affords flexibility but must be applied based on a risk matrix to ensure safe practice while supporting the community.
Minimum standards should be created and upheld for supervisors. Creating and mandating minimum standards for supervised practice will increase public safety and the quality of supervision.
We support Ahpra’s recommendation to update the framework, improve clarity and remove duplicated information. The intention to develop further supporting materials and a digital platform is positive, but these resources must not come at the expense of person-to-person support for supervisees and supervisors from Ahpra and the National Boards.
